How to make a film feel like the fifties?

January 8th, 2012

I am going to enter into this film fest, and I want to do something that has a 50’s sitcom vibe.
I want it to be in black and white, but I don’t really know how else to make it seem like it’s from the fifties.

Any suggestions on story ideas and other ways to make it seem older would be greatly appreciated.

PS. The film can only be like 5 minutes long, so it won’t be a half hour type story

Short film competition?

December 27th, 2011

Here’s the thing. A group of me and my friends, are considering creating our own film and entering it into some short film competitions, but are unable to find any. We live in Ireland, but to be honest, would submit ours for any competition we are illegible for, so if you could let me know of any that would be great! Thanks!

There’s all sorts of film fests – constantly and everywhere. I myself am interested because I have my own productions. The thing is – what kind of a film are you going to produce? A short documentary, a short feature film, a full length doc or feature? Independent or with subsidiaries? Cause every film fest has it’s own "motto" or theme or niche. For example, you might want to take a look at the future shorts website: http://www.futureshorts.com It’s an online film festival of sorts. There’s the Thessaloniki film fest coming up next week, but submissions are already closed. You might wanna check out poptent.net if you’re into advertising. There’s film festivals every week somewhere around the world.

what camera would you recommend for a young film maker?

December 24th, 2011

My parents are letting me get a new camera for the high school film fest. I am very interested in pursuing a career in film, and would like to start making semi-professional looking videos now. Thanks for your help!

it might be cheaper for them to buy you a car instead of professional video. you should be planning to go to college or at least community college to get training on media production. the school will have all the equipment needed to do class assignments. that way you can become familiar with how pro type cameras work, and give you a better idea as to what you really need.

Do I have a chance of getting into Yale or Princeton?

December 6th, 2011

Hey,
I’m currently a Junior enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program (IB). My GPA is a 4.0 with a weighted of 4.6. I am number 8 in my class rank. I’m currently taking all I.B. Classes. I have taken 2 AP Classes so far, AP World and AP Euro. I am part of the first class of I.B. Students at my school and thus have started the following traditions at my school:

-I.B. Council (President for Sophomore and Freshman Year) – I started this at my school and the number has grown by a substantial sum each year.
-I.B. Hangouts (IB Social Gatherings that take place after school once a month) – I started this too.
-I.B. Award Ceremonies/Events – Started these as well.
-There are numerous tiny traditions that I have also started for my I.B. Class, i.e. Class Photos/Superlatives.
- This year, we are doing our first 5K event on our annual "Multicultural Day" in the morning. The goal is to raise 5000 dollars to build a well in a country that lacks clean water and sanitation. I’m majoring in International Studies and might also double major in Film (I’ll do that if I get into Yale). I will be one of the main coordinators of the event, mainly in charge of advertising this event and the cause that goes behind it. I am passionate about sanitation, so that is why I’m helping to lead this event.

I was also in the following leading positions in my school.

-Freshman Class President
-Sophomore Class President
-Debate Club Member

I have participated in the BPA (Business Professionals of America) and placed in 1st in Regionals for Prepared Speech (Osceola County) and 4th in state for Prepared Speech (Florida). I will also be doing BPA again this year.

Won a few film festivals in my local area as well, including one by our local organization, "Community Vision".

I have over 100 Community Service Hours and will have over 300 by the end of my senior year.

I want to major in International Relations/ Global Affairs. I have not taken SAT’s/ACTS’s/SAT Subject Tests yet, but have been diligently studying for them. Just in case you need to know, I’m a first generation Asian with a low family income.
P.S. I speak English and Urdu, and learning Spanish. All IVY League schools have excellent financial aid programs, so please don’t post about tuition costs.

I would say that, in short, yes. You have a good chance, but you must keep in mind that there are students just like you (or with better qualifications than you) who have gotten rejected from Ivy League schools for no apparent reason. However, just out of curiosity – with your excellent qualifications, why would you choose to major in International Relations/ Global Affairs? I may be mistaken, but it is my understanding that such a major does not lead to the kind of contributions you may be able to make in society (you don’t learn much).

entering a short film contest?

November 10th, 2011

i want to enter a short film contest. im pretty good and everything. but i dont know where to enter it. and if i win do i get a reward? please help? and please no rude comments

Film contests are not as popular as they used to be. I would suggest you do a google search for "8mm/Super8/16mm/35mm/60mm film contests" (depending on what film you are using). Sundance film festival is probably the best known.

Whether there is a prize or not depends on the contest. Just be aware that you will be going up against actual film crews with equipment like Panavision cameras….but then again, look at that one movie "Blair witch project" and what they accomplished on only $35,000.
