How long does it take to shoot a typical short film?
I am auditioning for a short film Sat. and I’ve never done film before. If I were to get the part, how long does it usually take to film? What should I expect? Can I email the producer (with whom I set up the audition) and ask him what the production schedule is like or would that be a faux pas?
it al depends on how long and how good the the producer wants it to be.

Well it still varies
I’ve edited some thats been done in less than a week
but they have 15+ hr days
so depends all on the film… it gets done when it gets done
Well when i edit i go through at least 100 of film for a short movie

Shooting can take all day. However, it would depend on the producer, and that is why it is a good idea to get in contact with him/her if the schedule really matters for you. Don’t worry about it being a faux pas; just ask in a fairly polite and curious manner (you can do it, you’re an actor

There are a lot of variables, so it’s hard to say, depending on your part (how many scenes your in) it could only take a couple of hours but if your in two scenes they may be filming one in the morning and plan to film the next one at mid-night. I did one and we spent two 13 hour days filming it. Also it depends on how good you are and how picky the director is, you could have to re-shoot the same scenes a hundred times, then you may have to do voice overs and other touch ups and re-shooting afterward. I wouldn’t email that question until you have the part, they may think you’re asking because you have schedule conflicts and could dismiss you based on that alone, I think on average it could be anywhere from a weekend to a month.

Listen to Shannon, indeed there are many variables. From my experience shorts often take 2-4 days of shooting, 10-12 hours days. But your role could mean you’ll be there for 3 hours or for (almost) the whole time (decent productions ensure the actors spend less time on set than the crew).
Oh and if you do get the role, feel free to ask the relevant production contact (producer / UPM / AD / etc.) for a schedule or a time estimate.
